Issue Description
An estimated 31% of children have been bullied at school and technology such as mobile phones has made it even harder to get away from the bullies. Research has found that over one in three young people have been victims of cyberbullying. What is bullying behaviour and how can it be tackled? This book looks at the problem of bullying and the spread of cyberbullying.
The information comes from a variety of sources, including government reports and statistics, newspapers and magazine articles, surveys and polls, academic research and literature from charities and lobby groups; articles have been tailored to an 11 to 14 age group. Additionally, at the end of each chapter are two pages of activities relating to the articles and issues raised in that chapter.

Key Facts
- Bullying can happen to anyone at any age. Being bullied at school, home or online might involve someone pushing you, hitting you, teasing you, talking about you or calling you names. (page 1)
- 31% of children experienced bullying during childhood, a further 7% were discriminated against and 14% were made to feel different/an outsider. 43% experienced at least one of these things during childhood. (page 3)
- According to a survey from Ofsted, 25% of children were bullied at school in the last year and 6% are bullied most days. (page 4)
- 46% of teachers said young people who cannot afford the fashion items or branded goods owned by their peers have been excluded, isolated or bullied as a result. (page 7)
- Prejudice-related bullying is often characterised by abusive behaviour, intolerance or exclusion because of an individual’s gender, ethnicity, body image/size, sexuality, disability, age, religion or belief. (page 8)
- Secondary and primary school teachers say homophobic bullying is the most common form of bullying after bullying because of weight. (page 11)
- More than seven in ten children have been a bully, new figures from Beatbullying reveal. (page 14)
- Research conducted by Beatbullying with over 2000 young people aged between 11 and 18 has uncovered a growing epidemic, with over one in three revealing that they have been the victim of cyberbullying. (page 22)
